Does TRT Cause Hair Loss?

TRT stands for Testosterone Replacement Therapy, a form of treatment that is usually administered to men who have Low T. Recently, it has picked up a lot of popularity since people are using it as a supplement for conditions such as fatigue, low sexual drive, and lack of muscle mass. However, in some people, it causes the hair follicles on the scalp to shrink, which leads to thinning of hair and, finally, baldness. This condition is named androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, and it is the most common form of hair loss in males.

  • Finasteride (Propecia): This medication inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thus preventing DHT from affecting the hair follicles. It is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for male pattern baldness.
  • Minoxidil (Rogaine): This topical treatment can help stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. It does not stop DHT production but may help regrow hair in areas where it has thinned.

Both of these medications can be used alongside TRT to minimize hair loss, but it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.

2. Monitor Your TRT Dosage

Some individuals may experience hair loss due to higher dosages of testosterone. If you notice that your hair is thinning after starting TRT, it may be worth discussing the possibility of adjusting your dosage with your doctor. Lowering the dose of testosterone might reduce DHT levels and help prevent further hair loss.
